A flat face flange does not have ridge like ring type joint or raised face flange is is flat and unvarying. This flat surface allows the gasket to have full contact with the complete copulate side. When the bolts are torqued the flat face terminate the bending moment which is the main purpose. When using cast iron or fiberglass flanges, this bending moment can easily break the flange.

It is possible but uncommon for flat face flange gaskets to be metallic gaskets. Usually gaskets are made from non-metallic materials such as EPDM or Viton. It should go without saying that only flat face gaskets should be used on flat face flanges.

In general, flat faced flanges are used in low pressure and temperature environments such as water treatment or pump suction flanges.   Flat face flanges are usually common when the piping or piping components are brittle such as plastic, fiberglass or cast iron. However, it should be noted that these flanges come in all different types of materials, including steel.

These flanges typically are available in weld neck, slip on, socket weld, or threaded. Typically, flat face flanges are found in ANSI 150 & 300 ratings.

The Flat Face flange has a gasket surface in the same plane as the bolting circle face. Applications using flat face flanges are frequently those in which the mating flange or flanged fitting is made from a casting.

Flat face flanges are never to be bolted to a raised face flange. ASME B31.1 says that when connecting flat face cast iron flanges to carbon steel flanges, the raised face on the carbon steel flange must be removed, and that a full face gasket is required. This is to keep the thin, bittle cast iron flange from being sprung into the gap caused by the raised face of the carbon steel flange.

ASME B31.1 says that when connecting flat face cast iron flanges to carbon steel flanges, the raised face on the carbon steel flange must be removed, and that a full face gasket is required. This is to keep the thin, bittle cast iron flange from being sprung into the gap caused by the raised face of the carbon steel flange, Our flat flanges sit flat on the ground and have a neck. The flat face (full face) flange has a gasket surface in the same plane as the bolting circle face.
